SSRI’s are the most commonly used antidepressants. These drugs give ample supply of serotonin, which is a chemical used to transmit signals between the neurons. They have very less adverse effects.
NaSSAs are a different type of antidepressants which are used to block certain serotonin receptors. Some of the side effects which are observed in these drugs are drowsiness, obesity and increased appetite.
These are the oldest antidepressants which are being used for depression. Tricycilics block certain neurotransmitters. They are known to be very good in major depression cases.
MAOIs are used as a back up. When no other antidepressant works, then they depend on MAOIs. They are work by blocking enzyme monoamine which breaksdown the chemicals which are used in neuro transmission.
In some cases, a combination of drugs are used so that they can have a positive effect on the patient. These combined drugs are known as Augmented drugs. Some of the drugs are Gepirone, Nefazadone, Tandospirone and Trazadone.
