Ayurveda and Depression:

Ayurveda believes that the body is governed by three basic types of operating principles called the Tridoshas. They are vata, pata and kapha. Each of these types has its own features and coexists in harmony with the other types. Any ailment in the human body is because of an origin of disharmony between them. Cure or treatment of the ailments means restoring the harmony back.

Ayurveda believes that Depression is caused when the Kapha type tries to influence the Vata and the Pitta types. This leads to an imbalance between the tridoshas and self ignorance which results depression. Prerequisites for getting treated for depression through Ayurveda are:

  • Drinking water
  • Eating fruits
  • Giving up meat
  • Meditation
  • Sleeping early
  • Time table for taking meals
  • Getting up with sunrise
  • Long morning walks
  • Going to toilet at specific times only

Depression is treated by Ayurveda using meditation and head massaging techniques like Sirovasti and Thalam. Medicines from Rasayana treatment then restore the balance between Tridosha curing depression.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Depression:

Chinese medicine believes in a life force or energy called Qi. It flows inside our body is primarily responsible for driving it. All body ailments originate when this flow is hindered or stopped. Depression is also caused when Oi is not allowed to flow smoothly.

Some of the factors which stop the flow of Qi are:

  • Eating fried foods and consuming alcohol
  • Lack of physical activities
  • Suppression or over expression of negative emotions like grief and anger

When these factors stop the flow of Qi, the organ spleen gets affected. This causes fatigue and indigestion. The organ phlegm then gets affected and disturbs the mind. If the organ spleen and problems are ignored for long, the quality of blood decreases and affects the heart. This causes lack of sleep or insomnia. Research confirms the two way relationship between depression and insomnia. Treatment of depression primarily involves changes in the life style to bring back the free flow of Qi all along the body.
