What is Agitated Depression
Mania is an abnormal state of mind. The patient in this state is extremely furious, irritated and has increased energy levels. Depression is a state where the person feels sad, helpless and hopeless. When these two states co-exists in a person, he is said to be suffering from Agitated Depression. Such a mixed state should persist nearly every day for at least one week in an Agitated Depression patients case. The Mixed states are the most dangerous period of mood disorders. It is because during these periods the chances of attempting suicides increase greatly because of the persistent restlessness. This article tries to gain further insight on this mental problem.
Symptoms of Agitated Depression:
The signs of this type of depression is found commonly in middle-aged and elderly people. However, children and young people can also get this depression.
- Quick passing of baseless thoughts in mind
- Suicidal thoughts
- Hand Wringing
- Unconscious movements
- Having fits and outbursts
- Lack of Concentration
- Tearing of cloths
- Pulling of hair causing hair loss
- Picking of skin causing irritation
- Lack of sleep
Causes of Agitated Depression:
The medical cause behind this type of depression is not known yet. The common causes for depression are held responsible for causing Agitated Depression too. Research studies carried out in this topic has found that Agitated Depression is closely linked with bipolar depression too. There are chances of the symptoms of both these types of depression to overlap. This makes diagnosis of the depression difficult.
Treatment of Agitated Depression:
The treatment process of this depression is very complex. Since little is known about the disorder based on the symptoms, medicines given to bipolar disorder are also given to Agitated Depression patients. These medicines are called Antidepressants. But antidepressants are found to increase the restlessness in the patients. That is why, these medicines should be given along with another type of depression related medicines called anticonvulsants. These medicines try to decrease the increased energy levels typical in an Agitated depression patient. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two drugs namely Lamotrigine and lithium to treat bipolar disorder. They are used to treat Agitated depression too. Lamotrigine is an antidepressant and Lithium is believed to be an anticonvulsant. Its efficacy as an anticonvulsant is not proved yet.
